After an extensive journey spanning more than seven years since its initial reveal in 2016, Granblue Fantasy: Relink finally arrives, marking the end of a tumultuous development period that saw a change in development teams in 2019 and subsequent delays in 2022 and 2023. Despite the unpredictable journey to its release, Granblue Fantasy: Relink not only materializes but also surpasses expectations significantly. At its core, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a character-driven action RPG, yet it successfully marries elements of modern Ys, Tales, and Monster Hunter franchises, offering a battle system that is both visually striking and deeply satisfying. My experience with the game was profound, evoking a sense of fulfillment I wasn’t expecting to be as captivated as I was with this game and I’m glad it completely surpassed all my expectations.
For those new to the Granblue Fantasy universe, Relink serves as an accessible entry point, advancing the series' narrative without requiring familiarity with the original game or its spin-offs. The game cleverly integrates character backstories and lore through 'Fate Episodes'—narrative vignettes that provide insights into each character's past, their journey to the present, and their unique personalities, all brought to life with voice acting tailored to each character. The addition of a Glossary system enhances understanding and immersion by explaining relevant terms and concepts related to the game's world, ensuring that the pace of the game remains uninterrupted by the introduction of new terminology.
